Sometimes when a movie is utterly original, and executed with an abundance of affection and fun, it becomes irresistible. 2019’s romance-comedy-fantasy-musical, Yesterday is one of those movies.
An unsuccessful musician experiences a bizarre blip in reality, only to realize he is the sole person to know who the Beatles were or to remember their songs. When he starts performing them, it’s assumed he wrote them. As he becomes wildly successful he’s hailed as a song-writing genius, but he knows he’s living a lie.
While I would like to have seen the sci-fi elements explored a little more fully, this movie is charming, entertaining, endearing, and, at times, beautiful. Stylishly directed by Danny Boyle, there are excellent performances from a very appealing Himesh Patel, Lily James, the hilarious Kate McKinnon and even Ed Sheeran (as himself).
Is It Worth The Watch? Yes. Funny, suspenseful, touching, even a little romantic. Those songs are pretty good too.
